Put a reed diffuser where there's gentle airflow, like a hallway, entry or near a doorway, on a stable surface out of direct sun and away from heaters. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and sit it on a tray or coaster to protect the surface underneath.
Placement makes a bigger difference than most people expect. The same bottle can fill a room or barely register depending on where it sits. Here's how to get it right in each part of an Australian home.
The basics of reed diffuser placement
- Gentle airflow: people walking past move the scent around. Hallways, entries and spots near a doorway work well
- Not in a strong draught: right under an air conditioner vent or ceiling fan, the oil evaporates faster and the bottle runs out sooner
- Out of direct sun: a sunny windowsill heats the oil, so it evaporates faster and can fade the label
- Away from heat: keep it clear of heaters, fireplaces, ovens and lit candles
Protect your surfaces
Fragrance oil can mark timber, stone, marble and painted finishes. A drip from a flipped reed is enough to leave a ring.
- Use a tray or coaster: ceramic, glass or metal all work
- Flip reeds over the sink: let them drip for a second before you put them back
- Wipe spills straight away: use a dry cloth, then wash your hands

Keep it out of reach of children and pets
A reed diffuser is a glass bottle of fragrance oil with sticks poking out, so treat it like any other household product. Place it up high, on a shelf or bench that small hands and curious tails can't reach, and check the label for handling directions. If a pet has been near the oil, ask your vet.
Room by room
Entry and hallway
The first thing you notice when you walk in. A 200ml reed diffuser on a hall table or console catches the airflow of every coming and going. A light, fresh scent like bondi (strength 1/5) or coral (2/5) works for a narrow space.
Living room
Larger, open-plan rooms need more scent. Use a 200ml on a side table near the room's main path rather than tucked in a corner. For a big open-plan space, you may want two, or an electric diffuser alongside it. We cover electric placement in where to place an electric diffuser.
Bathroom and powder room
The most popular spot for a reed diffuser, and the place a 100ml reed diffuser suits best. Put it on the vanity away from the basin so it isn't splashed, and away from the shower so steam doesn't settle on it. More ideas in reed diffusers for the bathroom.
Bedroom
A 100ml on a dresser or shelf gives a soft background scent. Choose a lighter scent here, like rose gold (2/5) or dream (3/5), and keep it a little away from the bed rather than right beside it.
Kitchen and laundry
Keep it well away from the cooktop and oven, and off the bench where you prepare food. A shelf near the laundry door works well, since that's where people walk through.
100ml or 200ml: which size where?
- 100ml: bathrooms, powder rooms, bedrooms, studies. Typically lasts 1 to 3 months
- 200ml: living rooms, entries, open-plan areas. Typically lasts 1 to 6 months
How long a bottle lasts depends on the room's temperature, airflow and how often you flip the reeds. When it runs low, you can refill it: the 500ml traditional refill is made for the 200ml bottle.
FAQ
Should a reed diffuser go high or low?
Around waist to chest height works well in most rooms. It sits in the airflow of people walking past, and it's easier to keep out of reach of children and pets.
Can I put a reed diffuser near a window?
Yes, as long as it's out of direct sun. A window that's sometimes open adds gentle airflow, which helps.
Why can't I smell my reed diffuser any more?
Your nose gets used to a scent in a room you're in every day. Try moving it to a spot with more foot traffic, or flip the reeds. Visitors will usually still notice it.
