How to use room spray: how many sprays, where and when

To use a room spray, hold the bottle upright and spray two or three times into the air, aiming up and towards the middle of the room, not onto furniture or floors. Let the mist settle for a minute or two and the scent will spread through the space.

It sounds simple, and it is. But a few small habits make the difference between a room that smells lovely and one that smells of too much spray.

How many sprays?

  • Bathroom or powder room: one or two sprays
  • Bedroom or study: two sprays
  • Living room: two or three sprays
  • Large open-plan space: three or four, spread across the room rather than in one spot

Start with fewer. You can always add one more, but you can't take it back. Your nose also adjusts to a scent quickly, so the room usually smells stronger to someone walking in than it does to you.

Spray into the air, not onto surfaces

Room spray is made to be misted into the air. Aim slightly upwards, at about head height, so the fine droplets fall slowly and the scent spreads.

  • Avoid surfaces: don't spray directly onto timber, stone, polished or painted finishes, screens or glass
  • Not on skin: room spray is for rooms only. Keep it off skin, hair and clothes you're wearing
  • Away from food: don't spray over benches, plates or open food
  • No flames: don't spray near a lit candle, cooktop or heater

What about fabrics?

Some people like a light mist over curtains or a throw, held well back so the fabric doesn't get wet. If you try it, test on a hidden spot first and check the label on both the spray and the fabric. Skip delicate fabrics like silk altogether.

The best times to use room spray

  • Before guests: about ten minutes before they arrive, so the scent has settled by the time they walk in
  • After cleaning: once the vacuum is away and the windows are closed, it finishes the job
  • Entryways: the first place people notice scent. One or two sprays in the hallway or entry goes a long way
  • Bathrooms: a quick spray after use, or before visitors

Choosing a room spray or travel spray

kirri room sprays come in 50ml bottles, sized for the hall table or bathroom shelf. We also make 10ml travel sprays that fit in a handbag or carry-on, handy for a hotel room, a holiday rental or a quick refresh in the car with the doors open.

If you have a diffuser at home, choose a room spray in the same scent. The diffuser keeps a steady background, and the spray adds a lift when you want it. Our scent-matching guide can help you choose.

Room spray and diffusers: don't mix them

Room spray goes into the air, not into a diffuser. Spray formulas aren't made for kirri's waterless diffusers, which take their own sealed oil bottles. We explain more in can you use room spray in a smart diffuser.

FAQ

Can I spray room spray on my bed?

We'd suggest misting into the air above the bed rather than onto the linen. If you do want to mist fabric, hold the bottle well back, test a hidden spot first and check the label.

Can I use room spray as a perfume?

No. Room spray is made for rooms, not skin.

How often should I use room spray?

Whenever the room needs a lift. For most homes, that's before guests, after cleaning or once a day in a busy entry.
