Reed diffuser, showing how long reed diffusers last

How long do reed diffusers last? Sizes, refills and tips

A kirri 200ml reed diffuser typically lasts 1 to 6 months, and a 100ml reed diffuser 1 to 3 months. Where yours lands in that range comes down to how many reeds you use, how often you flip them, and how warm and airy the room is.

These are typical times, not guarantees. Here's what affects them, and how to get the most from every bottle.

How long each kirri diffuser lasts

  • 200ml reed diffuser: typically 1 to 6 months. Shop the 200ml reed diffuser.
  • 100ml reed diffuser: typically 1 to 3 months, and made for bathrooms, bedsides and smaller spaces. Shop the 100ml reed diffuser.
  • 500ml traditional refill: typically 4 to 8 months of topping up a 200ml reed diffuser.
  • Electric diffusers: the Element with a 15ml Micro Oil typically lasts 1 to 3 months. The Beacon or Pillar lasts 2 to 6 months on a 30ml Macro Oil and 6 to 12 months on a 100ml Aura Oil.

What makes a reed diffuser run out faster

  • More reeds: each reed draws oil, so a full bunch empties the bottle quicker.
  • Heat and sun: warm rooms speed up evaporation. A sunny windowsill in an Australian summer will run a bottle down fast.
  • Moving air: fans, air-con vents and open windows carry the scent away and use more oil.
  • Frequent flipping: every flip puts freshly soaked ends in the air, which gives a burst of scent and uses oil.

The scent matters too. Santal Woods uses delicate ingredients and can run down faster than some of our other scents.

How to make your reed diffuser last longer

  • Use fewer reeds: 3 or 4 in a 200ml bottle will stretch it out. See how many reeds to put in a diffuser.
  • Pick a cool, shaded spot: away from heaters, ovens and sunny windows.
  • Flip once a week: not every day.
  • Stay out of draughts: a spot away from vents keeps the scent in the room for longer.

The trade-off is a softer scent. If it ends up too gentle, the tips in how to make a reed diffuser stronger help you find a balance.

Is it finished, or are the reeds tired?

Check the oil level before you decide. If there's still oil in the bottle but the scent has faded, the reeds are usually the problem, not the oil. Dust and dried oil clog them over time, and fresh reeds bring the scent back. Our guide on how often to change reed diffuser reeds covers the signs, and reed diffuser not working? walks through every other fix.

Top up instead of starting again

When the bottle runs low, top it up rather than buying a whole new diffuser. The 500ml traditional refill is made for the 200ml reed diffuser, and the 100ml traditional refill suits the 100ml reed diffuser, wood diffuser and car diffuser. Here's how to refill a reed diffuser in 3 steps.

Never use a traditional refill in an electric diffuser. Refills are high in perfumer's alcohol, which is what lets them scent a room through reeds without a motor. That alcohol damages electric diffusers, so keep refills out of the Micro, Element, Beacon and Pillar. The Micro and Element take Micro Oil (15ml), and the Beacon and Pillar take Macro Oil (30ml) or Aura Oil (100ml). Not sure what fits? Check which oil fits my diffuser.

Lifespan FAQs

Why is my reed diffuser running out so fast?

The usual causes are too many reeds, a warm or sunny spot, or a draught from a fan or vent. Take out a couple of reeds and move the bottle somewhere cooler.

How long does a 500ml reed diffuser refill last?

Typically 4 to 8 months of topping up a 200ml kirri reed diffuser, depending on reeds, room and season.

Does a reed diffuser or an electric diffuser last longer?

A Beacon or Pillar with a 100ml Aura Oil typically lasts 6 to 12 months, and the kirri app lets you schedule run times so oil is only used when you want it. Read more on the difference between reed diffusers and electric diffusers.
