Reed diffuser being fixed when not working

Reed diffuser not working? Here's how to fix it

If your reed diffuser isn't working, the usual causes are that you've got used to the scent, the reeds are clogged, the oil is low, or the bottle is in the wrong spot. Most take a few minutes to fix, and none of them mean you need a new diffuser.

Work through the checks below in order. They start with the most common.

Why can't I smell my reed diffuser?

Most often, it's your nose. After a while in the same room you stop noticing a steady scent, even though it's still there. Visitors often notice it the moment they walk in.

  • Step out: leave the room for a few minutes, then come back in.
  • Ask someone else: a fresh nose is the quickest test.
  • Flip the reeds: if a flip brings the scent back, the diffuser is working fine.

Check 1: the reeds

Reeds draw oil up through tiny channels. Over weeks of use, dust and dried oil clog them, and the scent fades even with oil left in the bottle.

  • Brand new diffuser: give the reeds about 24 hours to soak through, and flip them after the first hour.
  • Older diffuser: flip the reeds. If that doesn't lift the scent, replace them with a reeds pack of 6.
  • Just changed scent: old reeds carry the old fragrance, so start the new scent with new reeds.
  • Too few reeds: try 4 to 6 in a 200ml bottle. Here's how many reeds to put in a diffuser.

Check 2: the oil

  • The level is low: if the reed ends barely reach the oil, they can't draw it up. Top it up with a traditional refill, following our steps for how to refill a reed diffuser.
  • There's water in the bottle: if the bottle wasn't fully dry after washing, the oil is diluted. Empty it, dry it and refill.
  • It's the wrong liquid: perfume and other oils aren't made to travel up reeds. A kirri traditional refill is.
  • Two scents are mixed: topping up with a different scent can leave a muddy smell. Start fresh with one scent.

Never use a traditional refill in an electric diffuser. Refills are high in perfumer's alcohol, which is what lets them scent a room through reeds without a motor. That alcohol damages electric diffusers, so keep refills out of the Micro, Element, Beacon and Pillar. The Micro and Element take Micro Oil (15ml), and the Beacon and Pillar take Macro Oil (30ml) or Aura Oil (100ml). Not sure what fits? Check which oil fits my diffuser.

Check 3: where it sits

  • Too much draught: air-con vents, fans and open windows carry the scent away before you notice it.
  • Too tucked away: a bottle in a corner or behind other objects gets little air movement. Try a spot people pass often, like an entry table or kitchen bench.
  • Too much heat: sun and heaters make the oil evaporate fast and can change how the scent smells.
  • Too big a room: one small bottle can't fill an open-plan living area.

Check 4: the scent and the size

Some scents are lighter by design. Each kirri product page rates strength out of 5: Bondi is 1, Rose Gold and Coral are 2, and Fig Tree is 5. If you want more scent, a stronger rating or a few extra reeds will help. Our guide on how to make a reed diffuser stronger has more fixes.

Size matters too. The 100ml reed diffuser is made for bathrooms and bedsides, and the 200ml reed diffuser suits a living room. For a big open-plan space, the Beacon diffuser covers up to 300sqm, and you set the strength in the kirri app from delicate to intense.

Troubleshooting FAQs

How long does a new reed diffuser take to start working?

Give it about 24 hours. Flipping the reeds after the first hour speeds things up.

Should I leave the stopper in my reed diffuser?

No. Take the stopper out when the reeds go in. Only put it back if you're moving the bottle, with the reeds removed.

Is my reed diffuser empty, or are the reeds just tired?

Check the oil level. If there's oil left but no scent, it's the reeds. If it's nearly empty, it's time to refill. See how long reed diffusers last for typical times.
