Oil diffusers

Oil diffusers do exactly this - diffuse fragrance oils throughout your home. There are a few different kinds of oil diffusers.

Waterless diffusers

For example, the kirri Micro Diffuser or a kirri Element, Beacon or Pillar diffuser.

Waterless diffusers use neither water nor heat. The oil bottle screws straight in, and on the kirri Micro, Element, Beacon and Pillar you set the intensity in the kirri app. They diffuse the fragrance oil in its purest form.

Pros

  • One touch – powerful scent on demand!
  • Undiluted, the oil is diffused into the room in its purest and most potent form
  • Lacking heating, the oil remains unaltered and intact
  • Controlled from your phone with the kirri app
  • Output setting is adjustable to achieve the desired scent level
  • No lights to brighten the room at night
  • Quick to set up: screw in the oil bottle and pair it with the app
  • No messy mixing with water required

Cons

  • The only downside of this diffuser is that the micro onboard air pump emits a sound, which is noticeable in very quiet rooms

Ultrasonic diffusers

Unlike waterless diffusers, ultrasonic diffusers use water to aid diffusion. And as the name suggests, they are completely noiseless. These usually emit a mist that carries the scent of the oil.

Pros

  • Can be cheaper than waterless diffusers
  • Silent
  • As the oil is diluted, it lasts longer - however, this comes at the expense of effectiveness

Cons

  • They need setting up in order to work effectively
  • The dilution with water means they are less potent
  • Frequent refilling is required
  • Humidifying the air might be undesirable
  • Messy mixing with water can create a mess

Personal diffusers

Also called evaporative diffusers, these diffusers are significantly smaller than the normal oil diffusers. The diffusion is made possible by air circulation either naturally or artificially by small fans.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Noiseless
  • They can be worn as necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
  • Portable
  • Personal

Cons

  • Small and not effective as room-wide scent diffusers

Reed diffusers

Reed diffusers are usually glass bottles containing scented oils, with reed sticks protruding from the top. The oil flows up the sticks before diffusing into the surroundings. They are often used in high traffic areas or in desolate rooms and houses.

Pros

  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Diffuse silently
  • Aesthetic (look great as decor!)
  • Very long lasting

Cons

  • Much less effective than waterless diffusers
  • Diluted with carrier oils, meaning they aren’t as pure
  • Limited to one permanent scent per diffuser (can’t change frequently)
