A kirri smart diffuser is quiet: the Element is rated at 36 dB, and on its lightest setting it only runs for 6 seconds before pausing for 120 seconds. What you might notice is a faint, soft pump sound during each short burst, then silence until the next one.
This question comes up a lot in our inbox, usually from people choosing a diffuser for a bedroom or wondering if theirs is louder than it should be. Here's what's normal, what the numbers mean and how to set yours up so you barely hear it.
Why a waterless diffuser makes any sound at all
The Element, Beacon, Pillar and Micro are all waterless. The oil bottle screws straight in and the diffuser turns the oil into a fine scent mist, with no water and no heat.
To make that mist, waterless diffusers use a small air pump. The pump is the part you can hear. It sounds like a soft hum or a light hiss, and it only runs while the diffuser is actively releasing scent.
- Normal: a gentle hum or hiss during each burst, then quiet
- Worth checking: rattling, buzzing against the surface, or a constant noise that doesn't stop between bursts
If yours rattles, first check the oil bottle is screwed in firmly and the diffuser is sitting flat. If the noise doesn't change, email help@houseofkirri.com and our team can help.
How loud each kirri diffuser is
The Element is the only kirri diffuser with a published noise figure, and it's our quietest-documented model.
- Element: 36 dB, listed on the Element diffuser product page. It's rechargeable, made from clay ceramic and metal, and sized for single rooms
- Beacon, Pillar and Micro: we don't publish a dB figure for these yet. If noise is your deciding factor, email help@houseofkirri.com before you buy and we'll talk you through it
Size matters here too. The Beacon covers up to 300sqm and the Pillar is floor-standing for larger rooms. Both are built for living areas, so for a bedroom the Element or Micro is usually the better fit. Our Element vs Beacon guide compares them side by side.
Intensity settings: it's off more than it's on
Every intensity setting in the kirri app runs in short bursts with a 120 second pause in between. That pause is why a smart diffuser feels so much quieter than you'd expect.
- Delicate: runs for 6 seconds, then pauses for 120
- Subtle: runs for 12 seconds, then pauses for 120
- Radiant: runs for 18 seconds, then pauses for 120
- Intense: runs for 24 seconds, then pauses for 120
On delicate, the pump is running for 6 seconds out of every 126. We always suggest starting there and building up, which also keeps the sound to a minimum. You can set a custom intensity in the app if none of the four suit.
Where to put it so you hear it less
Placement changes how loud a diffuser seems far more than people expect.
- Solid, flat surface: a hollow shelf or a wobbly side table can amplify the hum. A sturdy dresser works well
- Not beside your head: in a bedroom, put it across the room rather than on the bedside table
- Away from hard corners: tucked into a tight corner, sound bounces back at you
- Open air around it: it needs space to release the mist, so don't box it in a cupboard

Schedule it so it's off when you're in bed
The simplest fix for a bedroom is a schedule. In the kirri app you choose the times your diffuser runs, so it can scent the room in the evening and switch off before you turn in.
- Evening run: start it an hour or two before bedtime so the room already smells good when you walk in
- Off overnight: set the end time to when you usually go to bed
- Morning option: add a second run while you get ready, if you like
Step-by-step instructions are in how to set up a schedule on your kirri smart diffuser. One tip for Micro owners: schedules only run when the Micro is switched on and in Bluetooth mode.
Want no sound at all?
A reed diffuser has no motor, so it makes no noise. A 200ml reed diffuser typically lasts 1 to 6 months and gives a softer, steady background scent. If you're torn, our post on reed diffusers vs electric diffusers lays out the trade-offs.
