What the strength rating means
Each kirri scent has a strength rating out of five, shown on its product page. A higher number means the fragrance is more noticeable when you walk into the room and travels further from the diffuser.
Strength isn't the same as quality. Lighter scents are often the better choice for small rooms, bathrooms and anyone new to home fragrance.

Matching strength to the room
- Small or closed rooms: bathrooms, powder rooms, studies and bedrooms usually suit a 1/5 to 3/5 scent. A strong scent in a small room can feel like too much.
- Living areas: most living rooms handle a 3/5 or 4/5 scent comfortably.
- Large open-plan spaces and entries: high ceilings and airflow spread scent thin, so a 4/5 or 5/5 scent holds up better.
- Kitchens: a fresh scent at 2/5 to 4/5 works well, and won't compete with cooking.
How to turn a scent up or down
The rating is a starting point. Every kirri format gives you a way to adjust.
Reed diffusers
- More reeds, more scent: add reeds to make it stronger, take some out to soften it. Our guide to how many reeds to use has a starting point for each size.
- Flip the reeds: turning them every week or so refreshes the scent.
- Lighter scents with full reeds: a light scent with every reed in will use oil faster, so you may refill sooner.
Smart diffusers
- Use the app: the Element, Beacon and Pillar have four intensity levels in the kirri app: delicate, subtle, radiant and intense.
- Start on delicate: live with it for a day, then step up if you need more.
- Schedule it: running the diffuser only when you're home keeps the scent noticeable and makes the oil last longer.

Room sprays and car diffusers
- Room spray: one or two sprays for a small room, a few more for an open living area.
- Car diffuser: open the lid wider for more scent. In warmer months a smaller opening is usually enough.
Why a scent can seem weaker over time
If you've lived with the same scent for weeks, your nose gets used to it and you notice it less, even though visitors still can.
