Pairing scents is a fun way to make your home feel like your own. You don't need to be a perfumer: with a little thought, you can combine fragrances that work beautifully together from room to room.
Here are four steps to get started.
Step #1: Know what you want
Before you choose any scents, think about the feel you want and where you'll use them. A fresh, bright scent might suit a kitchen or bathroom in the morning, while something warm and woody can make a living room feel cosy at night.
Ask yourself who the space is for, what mood you want and how big the room is.
Step #2: Know the scent families you want to work with
Fragrances fall into families, such as fresh, floral, fruity and woody. Scents from the same or neighbouring families usually sit well together.
For example, Bondi (mandarin, watery ozone and black pepper over musk) and Coral (bergamot, pink pepper and eucalyptus over white musk) pair easily for a light, coastal feel. For something warmer, Santal Woods (sandalwood, cedar, cardamom and amber) sits nicely alongside Fig Tree (fresh fig, lavender and plum over cedarwood and musk).
Step #3: Balance your scents
Every fragrance has top, middle and base notes. Top notes are what you smell first and fade fastest. Middle notes form the heart of the scent. Base notes are the deepest and linger longest.
When you pair scents, try balancing a bright, citrusy fragrance with one that has a deeper woody or musky base, so the combination feels full rather than one-note.
Step #4: Live with it and adjust
Give a new pairing a day or two before you decide. Scent can feel different in the morning and the evening, and your nose adjusts over time.
If it isn't quite right, change the intensity in the kirri app, move a diffuser to another room or swap one scent for another.
The bottom line
Pairing scents is a creative process, and it's something you can easily do yourself. Start with a few scents you love and experiment.
