Fragrance oils and essential oils are popular ways to scent a home, whether in a diffuser or a reed diffuser. Like most good things, they keep best when stored well.
Here's how to look after your oils so they keep smelling the way they should.
What affects how long oils last
Four things wear down an oil's scent over time.
- Heat: high temperatures speed up the breakdown of an oil and weaken its scent.
- Light: direct sunlight can change an oil's colour and character.
- Air: oxygen causes oils to oxidise and evaporate faster, so the scent fades.
- Moisture: water in the bottle can make oil cloudy and spoil its scent.
How to store your oils
- Keep them cool and dry: a cupboard or shelf away from direct sunlight, heaters and steam works well.
- Use dark glass: amber or cobalt glass bottles help block light.
- Close the lid tightly: seal the bottle after each use to keep out air and moisture.
- Keep the bottle upright: this helps prevent leaks and keeps the cap clean.
Using your oils
kirri's diffuser oils are fragrance oils, made for home fragrance only. In a kirri Element, Beacon or Pillar diffuser, the bottle screws straight into the diffuser, so the oil stays sealed while it's in use.
